프란치스코 교황님께서 좋아하는 성인들

교황으로 선출된 지 몇 달 후인 2013년 11월 1일 모든 성인을 기리는 ‘모든 성인 대축일’에 교황 프란치스코는 “성인들은 슈퍼맨이 아니고 완벽하게 태어난 것도 아닙니다.”라고 말한다. 프란치스코 교황은 2013년 즉위한 이래 2024년 2월 11일까지 무려 912명의 성인을 성인품에 올린 것으로 파악된다. 물론 여기에는 1480년 이탈리아 오트란토에서 터키인들에게서 집단 학살을 당한 813명의 순교자가 포함되어 있는데, 이분들을 제외한다고 하더라도 99분의 성인들을 성인품에 올리신 것이 된다. 수많은 성인을 성인품에 올리면서 교황은 세례받은 모든 이가 거룩함으로 초대받았다는 사실을 강조해왔으며, 급기야 2018년에는 ‘현대 세계에서 성덕의 소명에 관한 교황 권고’인 <기뻐하고 즐거워하여라(Gaudete et exsultate)>를 펴내기도 하였다. 성인 한 분 한 분이 고유한 성덕의 향기를 지니신 것이 분명하지만, 누구나 그중 더 애착이 가고 자주 영감을 받게 되는 성인들도 계시게 마련이다. 교황 프란치스코께서는 수많은 성인 중 어떤 분을 더 자주 언급하시고 어려운 순간에 어떤 분을 더 자주 떠올리실까?

물론 아래에 언급하는 일곱 성인 말고도 교황 프란치스코께서 자주 언급하시는 성인, 예를 들어 바오로 6세Paul VI나 요한 23세John XXIII 교황, 맘마 안툴라Mama Antula 등 여러 성인을 열거할 수 있으며, 아르헨티나 출신 교황으로서 특별히 성모님을 향한 지대한 신심을 빼놓을 수 없는 것은 당연하다.

1. 성 요셉St. Joseph: 단연코 첫째 자리는 예수님의 양아버지인 성 요셉일 것이다. 성 요셉 대축일을 일주일 앞둔 3월 13일에 교황의 직무를 시작하게 된 교황 프란치스코는 2022년 바티칸 뉴스와의 인터뷰에서 그때의 취임 미사를 언급하면서 “저로서는 성 요셉께서 어떤 식으로든 제 곁에서 저를 도와주시겠다고 말씀하실 것이라고 생각합니다. 저는 제가 언제라도 의지할 수 있고 믿을 수 있으며 저를 위해 간청해주시라고 부탁할 수 있는 분이 성 요셉이라고 생각합니다.”라고 말한다.

프란치스코 교황께서는 2020년 12월에 요셉 성인을 보편 교회의 수호자로 선포한 지 150주년을 맞이하며 <아버지의 마음으로(Patris Corde)>라는 교황 교서(*참조. http://benjikim.com/?p=8855)를 발표하시면서 이어지는 2021년을 ‘성 요셉의 해’로 선포하신 바 있다. 2022년 인터뷰에서 교황은 “저로서는 성 요셉을 향한 저의 특별한 신심을 키워왔습니다. 성 요셉이야말로 우리 그리스도인 각자가 아름답고도 단순한 방식으로 어떤 존재여야 하는지를 대표한다고 여겼기 때문입니다.”라고 말한다.

2. 아씨시의 성 프란치스코: 교황 프란치스코는 자신의 교황직을 상징하는 이름으로서 아씨시의 가난한 성자였던 ‘프란치스코’를 선택하면서 전 세계 가톨릭 신자들은 놀라게 했다. 아르헨티나 출신 교황은 이 이름을 선정하게 된 이유로서 교황 선출을 축하하는 인사 자리에서 가난한 이를 잊지 말라는 브라질의 클라우디오 훔메스Claudio Hummes 추기경의 당부에서 영감을 얻었다고 여러 차례 밝힌 바 있다. 실제로 교황은 재임 기간 내내 사회에서 소외되고 어려운 이들을 먼저 생각하는 것을 중요시해왔다.

교황은 지금까지 여섯 차례나 아씨시를 방문하기도 하였으며 그곳 아씨시에서 이탈리아의 주보 성인이기도 한 프란치스코의 축일에 맞춰 2020년의 교황 회칙 <모든 형제들(Fratelli Tutti)>을 발표하며 서명하기도 했으며, 2015년에 발표한 피조물 보호에 관한 회칙 <찬미받으소서(Laudato Si’)> 역시 아씨시의 성 프란치스코로부터 영감을 얻었고, 회칙의 제목을 성인이 쓰신 ‘태양의 노래(Canticle of the Sun)’라는 찬미가에서 따왔다.

“아씨시의 성 프란치스코는 평화의 사람, 청빈의 사람, 창조를 사랑하고 노래하는 사람입니다. 이 모든 것의 뿌리는 무엇이고 원천은 무엇입니까? 바로 예수 그리스도이십니다. 성인은 예수 그리스도를 사랑합니다. 그래서 그분을 따르고자 자신이 바보가 되는 것을 두려워하지 않고 앞으로 나아갑니다. 그분 모든 체험의 원천은 신앙입니다.”라고 2022년 인터뷰에서 교황은 밝힌다.

3. 리지외의 성녀 테레사St. Thérèse of Lisieux: 2022년 책 출간을 위해 어떤 노숙인 그룹과 인터뷰를 진행하던 중 좋아하는 성인이 누구인지에 관한 질문을 받았는데, 그때 교황의 대답은 리지외의 성녀 테레사였다.

프랑스의 성인이자 교회의 박사이며 24세의 나이로 돌아가신 이 성녀를 두고 교황은 재임 기간 여러 번 언급했던 터라 이것이 그리 놀랄만한 일은 아니었다. 교황은 2015년 10월에 성녀의 부모인 루이스Louis와 젤리 마르틴Zélie Martin을 성인품에 올리기까지 했다. 2023년 성녀 테레사의 탄생 150주년과 시복 50주년을 기념하여 교황은 <사랑으로 이끄는 신뢰(C’est la Confiance)>라는 교황 권고를 발표하면서 이 젊은 성인이 복음과 신앙에서 “본질적이고 필수적인 것(essential and indispensable)”으로 어떻게 곧장 나아갈 수 있는지를 우리에게 가르쳐주었다고 설명한다. 이 문헌의 제목은 “우리를 사랑으로 이끄는 것은 오직 신뢰(믿음)뿐입니다.(불어-C’est la confiance et rien que la confiance qui doit nous conduire à l’Amour. 영어-It is confidence and nothing but confidence that must lead us to Love.)”라는 성녀의 말씀에서 따온 것이다.

교황은 2015년의 한 순방 중에 기자들과 나눈 대화에서 “저는 일이 어떻게 되어가는지 막막할 때 아기 예수의 성녀 데레사께 여쭙고, 어떤 문제가 되었든 성녀께서 문제를 해결해 주십사고 청하면서 장미 한 송이를 보내달라고 청하는 습관이 있습니다.”라고 말한 적이 있다.

4. 성녀 모니카St. Monica: 2024년 8월 27일 성녀 모니카 축일에 교황 프란치스코는 로마에 있는 성 아우구스티노 성당에 있는 성녀의 무덤에서 기도하기 위해 바티칸을 떠났다. 교황은 이미 2018년과 2020년에도 같은 방문을 했던 적이 있었으며 위대한 성인의 어머니이신 거룩한 어머니에 대한 존경과 사랑을 자주 표현한 바 있다.

바티칸 뉴스에 따르면 교황의 이러한 신심이 성녀 모니카로부터 영감을 얻은 ‘그리스도인 어머니회’의 회원이었던 자신의 어머니에게서 시작되었다고 한다.

교황은 2013년에 “거룩한 여성인 성녀 모니카께서 자기 아들 성 아우구스티누스의 회개를 위해 얼마나 많은 눈물을 쏟았습니까! 오늘날에도 자기 자녀들이 교회에 돌아오도록 얼마나 많은 어머니가 눈물을 흘리고 있는지요! 하느님의 은총을 믿고 희망을 잃지 마십시오!”라고 말한다. “노심초사勞心焦思했던 어머니는 자기 생애 끝에 ‘저의 하느님께서는 저에게 이렇게도 분에 넘치는 큰일을 마련해주셨습니다.(cumulatius hoc mihi Deus praestitit = my God has exceeded my expectations abundantly)!’라는 아름다운 말을 남겼습니다. 하느님께서는 성녀의 눈물 어린 요청에 아낌없이 갚아주셨습니다. 아우구스티누스는 모니카의 (진정한) 자식이었으니 어머니로부터 (하느님 앞에 안절부절못하는) 그 노심초사의 씨앗을 물려받았습니다. 이것은 ‘사랑의 안절부절(the restlessness of love)’이었습니다. 사랑하는 이의 선을 계속 추구하며 (이를 위해서는) 절대 멈추지 않고 눈물까지 흘리게 하는 열정이었습니다.”

5. 로욜라의 성 이냐시오와 성 베드로 파베르St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Peter Faber: 예수회 회원인 교황으로서 그가 속한 수도회의 창설자와 수도회의 성인들에게 특별한 애정을 갖는 것은 당연한 일이다. 교황은 로욜라의 성 이냐시오를 많은 문헌이나 연설에서 자주 언급하면서 그를 인용한다. 교황은 또한 이냐시오 성인의 ‘영신 수련’이 자신에게 얼마나 유용했었는지를 피력한다.

2016년 교황은 “성 이냐시오께서 주신 두 가지 실질적인 조언을 소개하니 이러한 ‘집안 광고’에 대해 죄송스럽게 생각합니다. 이냐시오 성인께서는 ‘영혼을 채우고 흡족하게 하는 것은 위대한 지식이 아니라 하느님의 것들을 내적으로 느끼고 음미하는 능력(영신 수련 제2항)’이라고 말씀하십니다.”라고 하면서 “성 이냐시오께서 덧붙이시기를 우리가 원하는 것을 만나고 음미할 때마다 ‘걱정하지 말고 만족하는 한 앞으로 나아가기 위해’ 평화롭게 기도해야만 한다고 하셨습니다.”라고 말씀하신다.

교황 프란치스코는 성 이냐시오 외에 다른 예수회 회원을 자주 언급하였는데, 2019년 9월에 교황으로서는 처음으로 ‘라 치빌타 가톨리카’라는 이탈리아 예수회 잡지와 가졌던 인터뷰에서 잘 알려지지 않았을지도 모르지만 특별한 애착이 가는 성인으로서 베드로 파베르 사제를 꼽았다. 사실 교황은 2013년 12월 17일 자신의 77번째 생일에 당시 복자품에 올라있던 베드로 파베르 사제를 성인품에 올린 바 있다. 이는 두 번째 기적 심사나 정식 절차와는 상관없이 이미 성인으로 공경받는 분을 교황이 성인에 준하는 분이라고 확인하고 선포하여 성인품에 올리는 ‘에퀴폴렌트(equipollent)’ 시성식이었다.

교황은 성인을 두고 2014년 1월에 구약의 영웅을 언급하며 “또 다른 다니엘처럼 이분은 위대한 열망을 가지고 노심초사하던 분이었습니다. 그분께서는 겸손하고 심오한 내면의 생활에 민감한 분이었습니다.”라고 말한다.

6. 성 샤를르 드 푸코St. Charles de Foucauld: 2022년 5월 15일 프란치스코 교황은 알제리 사하라 사막에 살았던 프랑스 사제이자 전직 군인이었던 샤를르 드 푸코 신부를 시성하였다. 시성식 며칠 뒤 교황은 이 성인이 개인적으로 자신에게 많은 도움을 주었으며 “신앙의 본질과 보편성을 밝히는 방법을 알았던 현시대의 예언자”로 생각한다고 말했다.

교황은 “저는 샤를르 드 푸코 성인께도 감사를 드리고 싶습니다. 제가 신학을 공부할 때, 성숙과 위기의 때에 그분의 영성이 제게 큰 도움이 되었기 때문입니다.”라고 말한다.

“샤를르 드 푸코 성인께서는 예수님께서 침묵으로 행동하시게 했습니다. 성인께서는 ‘성체성사적인 삶(Eucharistic life)’이 복음을 전한다고 확신하였습니다. 성인은 그리스도께서 정말로 첫 번째 복음전파자라고 믿습니다.”라고 말하는 교황은 2023년 일반알현을 통한 교리교육에서 이 성인을 두고 “저는 저 자신에게, 또 우리가 (진정) ‘성체성사의 힘을 믿고 있는가?’ 하고 묻습니다. 우리가 타인에게 다가갈 때, 우리 봉사의 시작과 완성을 성체 흠숭에서 찾고 있습니까?”라고 진지한 물음을 던진다.

7. 성 요한 보스코St. John Bosco: 교황은 2019년에 발간된 돈 보스코에 관한 책의 서문에서 아르헨티나 살레시오 학교에서 6학년을 다녔다고 설명하면서 살레시오회의 카리스마를 칭송했다. 교황은 애들과 젊은이들이 신앙 안에서 성장하고 성숙하게 돕도록 돈 보스코의 모범을 따라야 한다고 재임 기간 내내 강조해왔다.

교황은 2015년 성인의 탄생 200주년을 맞아 토리노를 방문했던 자리에서 “돈 보스코에 관해서라면 얼마나 많은 얘기를 할 수 있는지요! 그렇지만 저는 오늘 세 가지만 말씀드리겠습니다. 곧 하느님의 섭리를 믿는 것, 청소년 그중에서 가장 가난한 청소년을 위한 사제 성소, 그리고 베드로의 후계자인 교황에 대해 보여준 충성과 부지런한 봉사, 이 셋 말입니다.”라고 말했다.

Who are Pope Francis’ favorite saints?

Who are the holy men and women that Pope Francis has cited as sources of inspiration and examples? We share with you a few of them.

“The saints are not supermen, nor were they born perfect. They are like us, like each one of us,” Pope Francis said during an Angelus prayer on November 1, 2013, a couple of months after his election. Throughout his pontificate Pope Francis has canonized hundreds of saints and often highlighted how every baptized person is personally called to be holy. He even published an apostolic exhortation on the topic, Gaudete et exsultate, in 2018.

But which holy individuals does Pope Francis draw inspiration from or turn to in moments of trouble ? Aleteia goes through some of the Pontiff’s most beloved and mentioned saints.

1. St. Joseph: Pope Francis has always reserved special praise for Jesus’ father, St. Joseph. He is so dedicated to this saint that he even celebrated the Mass inaugurating his Petrine ministry, after being elected a week earlier, on March 19, St. Joseph’s feast day. “I think that in some way St. Joseph wanted to tell me that he would continue to help me, to be beside me, and I would be able to continue to think of him as a friend I could turn to, whom I could trust, whom I could ask to intercede and pray for me,” the Pope said about this Mass in an interview with Vatican News in 2022.

In December 2020, Pope Francis also published the apostolic letter “Patris Corde” (“With the heart of a father”), declaring St. Joseph patron saint of the universal Church and decreeing the following year, 2021, as a year dedicated to this saint.

“I have always nurtured a special devotion for St. Joseph because I believe that his person represents what Christian faith should be for each of us, in a beautiful and simple way,” the Pope said in an interview in 2022. “Joseph is a normal man and his holiness consists precisely in making himself a saint through the beautiful and ugly things he had to experience and face.”

2. St. Francis of Assisi: Pope Francis surprised Catholics across the world when he chose the name of the “poverello” of Assisi to represent his papacy. The Argentinian Pontiff has shared on multiple occasions how he was inspired to choose this name by Brazilian Cardinal Claudio Hummes, who when congratulating him on his election told him to not forget the poor. In fact, throughout his pontificate, Pope Francis has made it a point to favor those who are disadvantaged and on the margins of society.

He has also visited Assisi six times and signed important documents from there, such as his 2020 encyclical “Fratelli Tutti,” which he also published on this Italian saint’s feast day. His 2015 encyclical on the care for creation, “Laudato Si,” also draws inspiration from St. Francis, and the title is inspired by a song of praise, the Canticle of the Sun, written by the saint.

“[St.] Francis is the man of peace, the man of poverty, the man who loves and celebrates creation; but what is the root of all this, what is the source? Jesus Christ. He is in love with Jesus Christ, and, in order to follow him, is not afraid to make a fool of himself but goes forward. The source of his whole experience is faith,” Pope Francis said in 2022.

3. St. Thérèse of Lisieux: In 2022, Pope Francis was interviewed by a group of homeless people for a book, and they asked him who his favorite saint is. His response: St. Thérèse of Lisieux!

This came as no surprise, as throughout his pontificate the Pontiff has frequently mentioned the young French saint and Doctor of the Church, who died at 24 years old. He even canonized her parents, Louis and Zélie Martin, in October 2015. In 2023, the 150th anniversary of St. Thérèse’s birth and 50th anniversary of her beatification, he published an apostolic letter dedicated to her titled “C’est la confiance” (meaning “it is confidence”). There he explained how this young saint is able to teach us how to go straight to the “essential and indispensable” of the Gospel and the faith.

The title comes from a quote by St. Thérèse that says: “C’est la confiance et rien que la confiance qui doit nous conduire à l’Amour.” (It is confidence and nothing but confidence that must lead us to Love.)

“I have the habit, when I do not know how things are going, of asking St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus that if she takes care of some problem, anything at all, to send me a rose,” the Pontiff told journalists during a papal trip in 2015.

4. St. Monica: On August 27, 2024, St. Monica’s feast day, Pope Francis left the Vatican to go pray at her tomb in the Church of St. Augustine in Rome. He had already done the same in 2018 and 2020 and has often expressed his affection and admiration for this holy woman, mother of a great saint.

According to Vatican News, Pope Francis’ devotion for this saint comes from his own mother, who was part of an Association of Christian mothers, inspired by St. Monica.

“How many tears did that holy woman [St. Monica] shed for her son’s conversion, [St. Augustine]! And today too how many mothers shed tears so that their children will return to Christ! Do not lose hope in God’s grace!,” Pope Francis said in 2013. “A restless woman, this woman who at the end of her life said these beautiful words: ‘cumulatius hoc mihi Deus praestitit!’ [my God has exceeded my expectations abundantly]. God lavishly rewarded her tearful request! And Augustine was Monica’s heir, from her he received the seed of restlessness. This, then, is the restlessness of love: ceaselessly seeking the good of the other, of the beloved, without ever stopping and with the intensity that leads even to tears.”

5. St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Peter Faber: As a Jesuit, it is logical that Pope Francis would be particularly attached to the founder and holy men from his same religious family. He has often mentioned St. Ignatius of Loyola as a favorite and quotes him in many speeches and texts. Francis has also emphasized especially how useful spiritual exercises are to him.

“Two practical counsels that St. Ignatius gives and I apologize for the ‘in house’ advertising. He tells us that ‘it is not great knowledge that fills and satisfies the soul, but the ability to feel and savor the things of God interiorly’ (Spiritual Exercises, 2),” the Pope said in 2016. “St. Ignatius adds that whenever we encounter and savor something we desire, we should pray in peace, ‘without being anxious to move forward as long as I am satisfied.’”

Apart from St. Ignatius, Pope Francis has also often mentioned another Jesuit. In one of his first interviews as Pontiff to the Jesuit Italian magazine La Civiltà Cattolica, in September 2019, he cited Peter Faber, who was at the time blessed, as a holy man he was particularly attached to even though he was less well known. On December 17, 2013, the Pope’s 77th birthday, he canonized Peter Faber by decreeing an “equivalent (equipollent) canonization” meaning he becomes a saint without the need to attest a second miracle or have the formal process.

“It was this restlessness that Peter Faber had, a man of great aspirations, another Daniel.” Faber was a “modest, sensitive man with a profound inner life,” Pope Francis said in January 2014, referring to the Old Testament hero.

6. St. Charles de Foucauld: On May 15, 2022, Pope Francis canonized the French priest and former soldier Charles de Foucauld, who lived in the Sahara in Algeria. A couple of days later he shared that this saint personally helped him a lot and that he considers him “a prophet of our time, who knew how to bring to light the essentiality and universality of faith.”

“I would also like to thank St. Charles de Foucauld because his spirituality did me so much good when I was studying theology, a time of maturation and also of crisis,” he said.

“Charles lets Jesus act silently, convinced that ‘Eucharistic life’ evangelizes. Indeed, he believes that Christ is the first evangelizer,” the Pope said during a general audience in 2023 where he focused his catechesis on this saint. “And do we, I ask myself, believe in the power of the Eucharist? Does our going out to others, our service, find its beginning and its fulfillment there, in adoration?”

7. St. John Bosco: In the preface to a book on St. John Bosco, released in 2019, Pope Francis explained that he attended sixth grade at a Salesian school in Argentina and praised the charism of this congregation. Throughout his pontificate he has in fact highlighted St. John Bosco as an example to follow in order to help children and young people mature and grow in the faith.

“So much can be said about Don Bosco! But today I would like to remark upon only three distinguishing features: trust in divine Providence; vocation to be a priest to the young people, especially the poorest; loyal and diligent service to the Church, notably to the person of Peter’s Successor,” the Pope said in 2015 when he visited Turin for the 200th anniversary of the saint’s birth.

These are only some of the holy men and women Pope Francis has cited often, but there are many more one could include, such as Paul VI, John XXIII, Mama Antula, and more. Also, one can never forget to mention the Argentinian Pope’s great devotion to Mary, Mother of Jesus, (which could be another article in itself)!
