『우리는 지금 여기 우리 가운데에, 하느님이시고 우리의 친구이시며 위로자이시고 구세주이신 분, 우리의 고통을 덜어주시고 이 세상 고통에서 아가서에 나오는 사랑스러운 신부처럼 “예루살렘의 아가씨들이여 그대들에게 애원하니 나의 연인을 만나거든 내가 사랑 때문에 앓고 있다고 제발 그이에게 말해 주어요.”(아가 5,8) 하고 외칠 수 있는 큰 축복을 허락하신 분을 모시고 있습니다. 우리는 구세주이신 그분을 무궁무진한 신성 안에 소유하고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 성모님의 아홉 달 태중에서처럼, 그리고 십자가 위에 계시는 것처럼 그분을 소유하고 있습니다. 그분을 뵙는 기쁨을 누리기 위해 아주 먼 거리를 가야만 했던 초대 교회의 신자들보다도 우리는 운이 좋게 (어디나 지척에 있는) 본당에서 그분을 만날 수 있습니다. 그리고 신자들은 원하기만 하면 그분과 가장 감미로운 일치를 즐길 수도 있습니다. 오 복된 이들이여, 제가 오늘 여러분에게 보여주고 싶은 것은 주님께서 성체성사를 제정하신 것이 얼마나 크고도 좋은 일이었는지를 알려주고자 하는 것입니다.
우리의 하느님께서는 이제 막 걸음마를 배우는 어린 아기를 보살피는 어머니처럼 우리에게서 눈을 떼지 못하십니다. 모세는 “당신의 영광을 보여주십시오.”(탈출 33,18) “주님, 제가 정녕 당신 눈에 든다면, 주님께서 저와 함께 가 주시기를 바랍니다.”(탈출 34,9) 하면서 그것만이 자기가 바라는 모든 것이라고 외쳤습니다. 하느님께서 나를 보고 계시고, 나의 슬픔과 고통의 증인이 되어주시며, 나의 편이시라는 것이 얼마나 큰 위안인지요! 더욱 아름다운 것은 하느님께서 저의 마음을 지긋이 가라앉혀주신다는 것입니다. 오, 그리스도인들이여! 당신들은 그 누구도 가지지 못한 이런 특권의 행복을 누리고 있으니 얼마나 복된 존재들입니까? 선량한 신자들에게 하느님의 현존을 누리는 것이야말로 끝없는 행복이라고 말하는 제가 (과연) 옳지 않습니까? 이는 땅 위에 있는 천상입니다. 성 베르나르도(1090~1153년 활동)께서는 사랑과 슬픔을 못 이겨 부서지고 말 것 같은 세 가지 신비가 있다고 분명히 말씀하십니다. 첫째는 강생의 신비이며, 둘째는 예수 그리스도의 수난이며, 셋째는 가장 사랑스러운 제대 위의 성사입니다.(성 요한 마리아 비안네(1786~1859년)』

Faith in the Food Christ Gives
We possess here among us a God, a Friend, a Consoler, and a Redeemer who will ease our sufferings, who promises us in this place of hardships such great bliss that, with the bride in the Song of Songs, we may exclaim: Have you seen my Beloved? When you see him, tell him that I languish with love. We not only possess him in the immensity of divinity, but have him also as he was during the nine months in Mary’s womb, and again as he was on the cross. More fortunate than the first Christians, who had to go fifty or sixty miles for the happiness of seeing him, the church of every parish contains him. Any congregation can, if it so desires, enjoy his most sweet companionship. O happy people, what I wish to show you today is how good God was in instituting the adorable sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.
Our God no more loses sight of us than does a mother of her child that is beginning to walk. My God, cried Moses, show me, if it pleases you, your countenance, then shall I possess all things that I want. How consoling for a Christian is the blessed thought that God sees him, that God witnesses his sorrows and his troubles, that God is by his side! What is still better, God presses him tenderly to his heart! O Christian people, how happy are you in the enjoyment of so many privileges which others have not! Am I not right when I say that the presence of God is an endless happiness for the good Christian? It is heaven upon earth. Saint Bernard assures us that there are three mysteries upon which he cannot meditate without feeling as if his heart would break with love and sadness. The first is the mystery of the Incarnation, the other that of the Passion of Jesus Christ, and the third is the most adorable sacrament of the altar.
