인내는 완성이 아닌 미완성, 전체가 아닌 부분을 사는 예술. 인내는 하느님의 나라를 기다리는 시간의 역사를 사는 사람들에게 꼭 필요한 것. 인내는 하느님, 교회, 자기 자신과 더불어 하는 숙고, 그리고 숙고.
하느님께는 아직도 당신 약속대로 눈먼 이와 다리를 저는 이, 말 못 하고 듣지 못하는 이, 악과 죄, 그리고 죽음으로부터 ‘모두, 그리고 영원히’ 구하셔야만 할 사람들이 있기 때문이고, 교회가 아직도 복음의 권고를 제대로 잘 살지 못하고 있기 때문이며, 우리가 아직도 우리의 소명을 성실히 살지 못할 뿐만 아니라 부적절하게 살고 있기 때문이다.
인내는 『자신을 직면하는 힘(토마스 아퀴나스)』, 낙담, 절망, 슬픔에 빠지지 않는 능력. 인내는 우리의 현실에서 하느님, 교회, 그리고 우리 자신과 관련된 은총이요 ‘마크로쑤미아’. 인내는 인간 편에서 성령의 열매(참조. 갈라 5,22), “사랑은 참고 기다립니다.”(1코린 13,4) 하였으니 실로 사랑 안에서 구체화하는 영혼의 위대함. 아멘!
* 마크로쑤미아(μακροθυμία, makrothumia) : makrós는 영어로 ‘long’이고 thymós는 ‘passion 혹은 anger나 suffering’이다. 말 그대로 직역하면 ‘long-passion/suffering’, 곧 ‘기나긴 고통이요 수난’ 정도이겠다. 흔히 ‘주님의 인내’요 ‘하느님의 인내’, ‘참고 기다리심’을 가리키는 데에 사용되는 말이다.(참조. 1베드 3,20 2베드 3,15)

La pazienza
La pazienza è l’arte di vivere l’incompiutezza e la parzialità. La pazienza è necessaria per chi vive nella storia l’attesa del Regno: essa si declina come pazienza nei confronti di Dio, della chiesa e di se stessi. Nei confronti di Dio, perché Dio non ha ancora adempiuto, per sempre e per tutti, le promesse di guarigione dei ciechi e degli zoppi, dei muti e dei sordi, le promesse di salvezza dal male, dal peccato, dalla morte; nei confronti della chiesa,
perché la comunità cristiana spesso si mostra inadempiente rispetto alle esigenze evangeliche; nei confronti nostri, perché scopriamo in noi inadeguatezze e difformità rispetto alla nostra vocazione.
La pazienza è «forza nei confronti di se stessi» (Tommaso d’Aquino), capacità di non lasciarsi andare all’abbattimento, alla tristezza, alla disperazione. E questo grazie al fatto che la pazienza è sguardo in grande (makrothymía) sulla realtà, su Dio, sulla chiesa, su noi stessi. La pazienza è grandezza d’animo e si concretizza nell’amore: «l’amore pazienta» (1 Cor 13,4). Amen!

The patience
Patience is the art of living with incompleteness and partiality. Patience is necessary for those who live in time waiting for the Kingdom: it is expressed as patience with God, with the Church and with oneself.
Patience with God, because God has not yet fulfilled, once and for all, the promises of healing the blind and the lame, the mute and the deaf, the promises of salvation from evil, from sin, from death; patience with the church, because the Christian community often fails to meet the demands of the Gospel; patience with ourselves, because we discover in ourselves inadequacies and infidelities with respect to our vocation. Patience is “strength in relation to oneself”(Thomas Aquinas), the capacity not to allow oneself to sink into discouragement, sadness, or despair.
