6월 8일이면 새로운 교황 레오 14세께서 267대 교황이 되신지 한 달이 된다. 온 세상이 그분을 바라보고 그분의 말 한마디 한마디에 귀를 기울인다. 꼭 가톨릭 신자가 아니더라도 그분을 그렇게 주목하는 이유 중 하나는 세상사가 늘 그렇듯이 예상되고 기대되었던 많은 후보자와 달리 예상을 뒤엎고 뜻밖인 듯한(?) 새로운 교황이 앞으로 어떤 노선을 취할 것인지, 그리고 가톨릭교회를 어떤 방향으로 이끌어갈 것인지를 미리 가늠해보고자 하는 이유 때문일 것이다.
6월 5일자 aleteia.org에 흥미로운 기사 하나가 실렸다. 교황 취임 이후 그분의 지난 4주 동안 그분께서 공식적으로 하신 강론이나 연설, 메시지 등을 분석한 The I.MEDIA 보고서 전달 기사이다. 이는 2025년 5월 8일부터 6월 2일까지 교황께서 하신 발언의 분석 보고서로서 교황께서 그동안 발표하신 4개의 주일 삼종 기도 훈화, 2개의 일반 알현, 17개의 연설, 7개의 강론, 전달문이나 발표하신 5개의 메시지 등 40여 개의 텍스트에서 의미 있는 명사와 동사, 그리고 형용사구를 추출하여 집계하고 분석한 내용이다.

그동안 교황님의 말씀에서 가장 많이 사용된 어휘는 단연코 “하느님(God-162회)”이다. “예수님(Jesus)”이라는 이름은 80회 사용되었고, “그리스도(Christ)”와 “주님(Lord)”은 각각 54회 사용되었다. 또한 교황직 시작에 맞추어 “세상(world–98회)”이나 “교회(Church-138회)”와 관련하여 “사명(mission)”이라는 말이 34회 사용되었고, 이 외에도 “로마(Rome-35회)”의 주교, 전임자 “프란치스코(Francis-37회)”라는 말들이 자주 보인다. 새 교황은 교황으로서 맞는 청중이나 손님들을 “형제자매들(brothers and sisters)”이라고 지칭하고, 그분 말씀에는 “형제애(fraternity)”와 관련한 말이 매우 자주 등장하며, 대화 상대방에게 “감사합니다(Thank you-82회)”라고 말하는 데에도 신경을 쓴다.
교황은 연설이나 강론에서 여러 “성인들(saints-116회)”을 인용하였으며, 그중에서도 후계자로서 제1대 교황이신 “성 베드로(St. Peter-30회)”, 그리고 그가 속했던 수도회에 영감을 주셨던 “성 아우구스티누스(St. Augustine-14회)”를 즐겨 인용한다. 그는 자신의 첫 번째 연설에서 자신을 “히포의 주교님(the Bishop of Hoppo, Augustine)”의 “아들(son)”이라고 선언했다. 성 아우구스티누스 사상에서 매우 중요한 “은총(grace-38회)”이라는 말의 반복적인 사용은 성 아우구스티누스와 자신과의 영적 유대를 반영한다. 삼위일체의 한 분이신 “성령(Holy Spirit)” 또한 자주 언급된다.
교황의 발코니에서 베드로 광장에 모인 사람들에게 교황으로서 한 첫마디 말씀은 “평화가 여러분 모두와 함께!(Peace be with you all!)”라는 말이었다. 이 말씀 뒤에 그는 “부활하신 그리스도의 평화”에 대해 말씀하시고, 이러한 평화는 “무장하지 않고 무장해제 된, 겸손하고 인내하는(a peace that is unarmed and disarming, humble and persevering)” 평화라고 말씀하셨다. 그분은 “평화(peace-82회)”는 “두 갈등 사이에서 잠깐 멈춤(a pause between two conflicts)”이 아니라 “교만과 욕망을 뽑아냄으로써 마음 안에서 마음으로부터 이루어지는 하느님의 은총(a gift of God that is built in the heart and from the heart by uprooting pride and demands)”이라고 역설한다. 이를 반영이라도 하듯이 전임자의 노선을 따라 평화, 특별히 가자 지구와 우크라이나의 평화를 자주 언급하였다.
“이러한 평화가 확산하도록 저의 온 힘을 다하겠습니다.(I will do everything in my power to ensure that this peace spreads.)”라고 말하는 새 교황은 “교황청이 원수들이 서로 만나고 서로의 눈을 볼 수 있도록, 그래서 국가들이 평화의 존엄성을 재발견하도록 도울 준비가 되어있다.(the Holy See was available “so that enemies may meet and look each other in the eye” in order to help nations rediscover “the dignity of peace.)”고 선언하였다.
그동안 레오 14세의 글에서 반복되는 다른 주제는 “생명(life-128회)”인데, 그에게 이는 무엇보다도 하느님의 선물이다. “우리는 우리의 생명을 우리가 원하기도 전에 받았습니다.(We received life even before we wanted it.)”라고 말하면서 교황은 모든 이가 “믿을만한 인생(credible lives)”을 살도록 촉구한다. 그러면서도 교황은 타인에게 초점을 맞춘 이러한 그리스도인 삶의 모델이 “생명을 주는 것이 아니라 빼앗으려고 하는 자유를 추구할 때마다(every time we invoke freedom not to give life, but to take it away)” (우리 삶의 모델을) 배반하고 만다며 강조한다.
미국 태생의 교황에게 또 다른 열쇳말 하나는 “신앙(faith-64회)”이다. “신앙의 기쁨을 전하면서 타인의 신앙을 도우라(supporting the faith of others by transmitting the joy of faith)”고 반복해서 신앙에 관해 말하는 교황은 “우리의 신앙이 우리에게 힘을 줍니다.(It is our faith that gives us strength.)”라고 신앙을 설명하고, 그리스도인들에게 “신앙 전파를 저해하는 신앙의 독점화(사유화)에 맞서도록(against a ‘privatization’ of faith that compromises its transmission)” 경고한다.
“사랑(love-97회)”이라는 단어는 레오 교황이 가장 많이 사용하는 어휘 중 하나이다. 교황의 말씀에서 이 사랑은 하느님에게서 나온다. 그리스도인은 “복음 선포의 원동력이자 원천(source and driving force of the proclamation of the Gospel)”으로서 이 사랑을 갈망해야 한다고 그는 말한다. 그는 교황 즉위 미사에서 “이제는 사랑의 시간!(This is the hour for love!)”이라고 선언한 뒤, “사랑이 없는 언어의 혼란(the confusion of languages without love)”을 경고했다.

What are the words most used by Pope Leo XIV so far?
It’s been nearly a month since the new pope was elected. An analysis of the top words in the texts he has pronounced or sent in writing reveal his priorities.
On June 8, 2025, Pope Leo XIV celebrates his first month as head of the Catholic Church. In nearly four weeks, the pontiff has delivered or written nearly 40 texts (homilies, speeches, messages, etc.). The I.MEDIA agency analyzed this corpus to identify the words most frequently used by the 267th pope.
This analysis includes all of the official speeches delivered by Pope Leo XIV between May 8 and June 2, 2025. It includes his four addresses at the Sunday Marian prayers, his first two general audiences, 17 speeches, seven homilies, and five messages that he read or addressed during this period.
God takes the lead
For greater relevance, the analysis excludes overly common words and focuses on significant nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
The word that appears most frequently in the papal speeches is “God,” used 162 times since the beginning of the pontificate. The Pope has also written or spoken the name “Jesus” 80 times, and “Christ” and “Lord” 54 times each.
The Pontiff’s speeches are naturally marked by the context of the beginning of his pontificate, which leads him to speak about his “mission” (34 occurrences) in relation to the “world” (98) and the “Church” (138), as “pope” (54), bishop of “Rome” (35), and successor to “Francis” (37). As the pope generally addresses his guests or audience as “brothers and sisters,” words referring to fraternity appear very regularly (115). The pontiff also took care to say “thank you” (82) to his interlocutors.
In his speeches and homilies, the Pope has quoted numerous “saints” (116 occurrences), foremost among them “St. Peter” (30), whose successor he is, but also “St. Augustine” (14), the inspiration for his order. He declared himself a “son” of the Bishop of Hippo in his first speech. The recurring presence of the word “grace (38), which is very important in Augustinian thought, is another reflection of this spiritual kinship. The “Holy Spirit,” the third person of the Trinity, is also mentioned frequently.
“Peace be with you”
“Peace be with you all!” were the first words of Leo XIV in the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica on May 8. He then spoke of “the peace of the risen Christ,” which is “a peace that is unarmed and disarming, humble and persevering.” “Peace” (82), he recalled in several of his speeches, is not “a pause between two conflicts,” but a “gift of God” that is built “in the heart and from the heart, by uprooting pride and demands.”
In continuity with the previous pontificate, Leo XIV has made several appeals for peace, notably in Gaza and Ukraine.
“I will do everything in my power to ensure that this peace spreads,” he said, declaring that the Holy See was available “so that enemies may meet and look each other in the eye” in order to help nations rediscover “the dignity of peace.”
Life, faith, and love
Another recurring theme in Leo XIV’s writings is that of “life” (128 occurrences), first and foremost as a gift from God. “We received life even before we wanted it,” he said, encouraging everyone to live “credible lives.” However, he emphasized how this Christian model of life, focused on others, is betrayed “every time we invoke freedom not to give life, but to take it away.”
“Faith” (64) is another key word in the early speeches of the American pope, who repeatedly called for “supporting the faith of others” by transmitting the “joy of faith.” “It is our faith that gives us strength,” he explained, warning Christians against a “privatization” of faith that compromises its transmission.
Finally, the word “love” (97) is one of the most frequently used by Leo XIV. This love, in the pope’s speeches, comes from God and must be desired by Christians as the “source and driving force of the proclamation of the Gospel.” “This is the hour for love!” he proclaimed during the inaugural Mass of his pontificate, later warning against “the confusion of languages without love.”
